Writer: ShaKera Ferguson | I am so introverted and my circle of friends reflect that. Being introverted may create lots of alone time. It can often make you feel alone and even lonely. This is very common. A lot of us feel like no one understands how we feel and we fall into the trap of solitude. No matter your reason for isolation, guess what ladies, there is a place for you. And you’re not alone.
Some relationships are built in unexpected ways. It could be accidental meetings, introductions by friends, or even an online community such as Facebook or Instagram. No matter where these relationships are created, there is a sisterhood that is formed. I have had a couple of unexpected relationships/sisterships form.
Reminiscing over college days, I remember all of the friendship that were created. One day I was late to class so I sat in the back of the class, hoping no one noticed my tardiness. I looked around and I saw this girl, Ami, next to me. So I asked her if I missed any important information. Introductions were made and a friendship was created. Now, 16 years later, Ami and I have more than a friendship, it’s a sisterhood. We have been through many of life’s challenges; we survived undergrad TOGETHER, celebrated the births of loved ones TOGETHER, and even the untimely deaths of loved ones TOGETHER. These milestones in life strengthen a bond that no one can break. While there are times in which we do not agree (or even get along) that bond is there and with maturity and growth, we choose not to allow anything or anyone shake it.
Another sistership was established when my fellow OTPS contributor Marcy Cruz, my fairy writer mother, wrote an article where she featured Jamilyn (Jaye) Griggs and myself as bloggers to watch. Prior to this, I had seen a few photos of Jaye, but I had no idea who she was. After this feature, Jaye and I started to reach out to each other about our love for fashion. It’s funny how plus-size women are so giddy over fashion now. This love of fashion turned this online interaction to an offline friendship. After countless hours of conversations it is safe to say that Jaye is a sister. I would have never imagined how Jaye’s introduction to my life would be so life changing. Jaye continues to inspire me and push me to greatness. This is what life is about, the sisterhoods.
These sisterships couldn’t be more different from each other and they make me who I am today.
Ultimately, it’s a choice to have others along in your journey of life. Start by sharing yourself. Open up to others and share your experiences. Do not be afraid to build healthy online relationships with women like you. You would be surprised how a click can change your life forever. This is not only empowering to you, but it may empower others. When you share your testimonies of your life, there will be someone there to support you while you are empowering others to share their story. You are the master of your destiny and only you can choose to share your life’s journey. Knowing that you have a community to belong and support you will forever be an inspiration. Whether that’s with a friend, family member, or an online community.
Ladies be open to speaking to other women. You would be amazed what a simple greeting or compliment would do for another woman’s confidence. We never know what another is going through so a pleasant greeting could be life changing or even lifesaving. As women and especially plus women we need support systems in place to assist with vulnerable moments that life brings forth.
So who is ready for new relationships? Ready to create sisterhoods for life? You will never be alone. We are a sisterhood.
